
October 8, 2026, is an Early Release Day for students and Professional Development Day for Staff
Support Staff will participate in building or departmental professional activities as noted below.
Special Educators and Related Service Providers
Moderate Needs Special Education Teachers and Related Service Providers (PreK to Grade 2) will collaboratively review IEP development to promote a shared approach to each component of the IEP. The group will also review transitions between grade-levels and buildings to ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place for transitioning students.
Severe Needs Special Education Teachers (3-4) will participate in MCAS-ALT preparation, collaboration, and data review.
Moderate Needs Special Education Teachers (3- 4) will participate in building-based discussions regarding iReady noted below.
Special Education Teachers and Related Service Providers (5-8) will meet as a department to review EL accommodations, student participation at Team Meetings, service-delivery grid, and other related topics.
Special Education Teachers and Related Service Providers (9-12) will meet as a department to review co-teaching arrangements and approaches, as well as collaborative case review.
Abington Early Education Program
The professional staff at AEEP will collaborate with BBES Special Educators to further develop processes for developing IEPs that support successful transition to Kindergarten. AEEP paraprofessionals will participate in behavior training.
Beaver Brook Elementary School
Teachers will analyze data from the September i-Ready Diagnostic administration in both ELA and Mathematics. Support staff will participate in professional activities related to their unique work with students as directed by their administrator.
Woodsdale Elementary School
Teachers, tutors, and paraeducators explore and sample literacy tasks that can be incorporated into classroom and small group instruction. Grade-level teams will also participate in small-group data meetings to review Fall i-Ready data and identify areas of academic strength and areas for continued growth. Staff will collaborate to discuss student needs and begin planning instructional supports to help all students continue to make progress throughout the year.
Abington Middle School
Grade 5 and 6 teachers will analyze data from the September i-Ready Diagnostic administration in both ELA and Mathematics. Support staff will participate in professional activities related to their unique work with students as directed by their administrator. Grade 7 and 8 teachers will join the departmental PD below.
Abington High School
AHS paraprofessionals will join the department to which they are assigned. AHS faculty will work in departments (7-12) on professional activities including:
· Art (K-12) – AHS art teachers will attend a workshop at MassArt. The rest of the Art Department will continue work on aligning their curriculum to the "Connecting" standard of the Massachusetts Visual Arts Frameworks
· ELA (7-12)- ELA teachers in grades 7-12 will be continuing our process of curriculum review and development. We will use this time to target vertical alignment and to give updates on the adjustments that have been made to common assessments, objectives, and rubrics.
· ELE (K-12) - The English Language Education (ELE) department will analyze 2026 WIDA ACCESS data to identify student strengths, areas of need, and students who have not met their annual English language proficiency benchmarks. The day will conclude with time for vertical alignment and collaboration across schools.
· Guidance – The Guidance Department will be reviewing and updating the Freshmen Guidance Workshop.
· History (7-12) - The History and Business department will be continuing work on developing common rubrics for speaking and reading comprehension.
· Math (7-12) - The math department 7-12 will continue their work creating standards based curriculum and assessments.
· Music (K-12) - The Music Department will review the beginning-of-school transitions for all buildings, including new instrumental musicians at AMS, and the AHS Program of Studies and Essential Standards. Staff will also prepare for upcoming Marching Band and Veterans Day performances and plan and review local, regional, and area auditions and festival opportunities.
· Nursing (P-12) -The nursing team will meet to discuss field trips and determine the appropriate medical coverage needed for each type of trip. The team will discuss how specific health-related responsibilities can be appropriately delegated to teachers and other staff members, including what information and training may be needed.
· Science (7-12) - The Science Department will continue to work on the Abington High School Essential Standards project, with a heavy focus on 9th grade biology. The department will also be working on common assessments between classes to help align the department to standards.
· Wellness (K-12) - The Wellness Department will finalize the updates to the K-12 curriculum based on the MA 2023 Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Framework. We will also be looking at the role of AI in teaching wellness.
· World Language (7-12) - The World Language department will be reviewing Spanish I common assessments and anchoring grading practices with our common rubrics.
